We at Funky Little Shack pride ourselves on our ability to create a luxury sustainable small home or granny flat.
Here we go into detail on our ethos of Triple Bottom Line Sustainability. We incorporate its principles in every design concept, every drawing, and every build.
But what exactly does it mean? Here how you can live a life that is financially sound, socially supportive and environmentally friendly.
Financially Sustainable
Make the most of the land you own with a secondary dwelling!
One of the most rewarding reasons for having a second home in your backyard is the income it can provide. When you already have the land, adding a granny flat to your existing property can be a much smarter option than building a separate investment property.
In many cases, there are no additional Council infrastructure charges. This saves you thousands, while potentially providing you with a positive cash flow rental income. That means extra cash for you and your family’s lifestyle.
It’s also going to result in a spike in property value. There is a large demand for properties with two homes, and there aren’t many available. We’ve spoken to real estate agents across South-East Queensland, with many stating one in every 10 customers look for a dual living accommodation.
We’ve designed a plethora of sustainable luxury granny flats from Brisbane to Byron Bay. Check them out here.
Environmentally Sustainable
If you have the know-how, a sustainable small home can help you save on energy and look after the environment. Let’s talk about our Smart Design System.
Living in a smaller home naturally consumes less energy. This means it costs less electricity to run, requiring less heating and cooling. We also use energy efficient appliances, water efficient shower heads and taps.
In addition, we make sure all our designs are orientated towards the north to maximise sun light. Strategically positioned windows and sliding doors allow for natural cross breezes. Ceilings are high to allow hot air to rise and escape through ceiling vents. Meanwhile, insulation in walls and roof help reduce extremes in temperature.
Where possible, Shacks are constructed from timber framing and timber flooring on stumps instead of a concrete slab. It’s a method that’s more sustainable for our environment as timber is a renewable resource. This also minimises adverse effect on land, adding to the protection of biodiversity and ecology.

Socially Sustainable
A secondary dwelling on your property can keep your family or friends closers than ever.
It’s no secret just how hard it’s becoming for future generations to afford quality living. Young adults often give up trying to buy a home before they even start. They just roll into the rental market for years on end.
As housing affordability becomes further and further out of reach, this often makes it impossible to save for a deposit on their own home. A number of our clients have turned to Funky Little Shack to provide affordable housing for their adult children and young family members.
Clients have also been able to provide Shacks for their ageing parents. Many families aren’t happy with the idea of putting their elderly parents into aged care homes. A Funky Little Shack is a fantastic option that lets people keep their freedom, live in a beautiful space, and stay close to loved ones.
In addition, all our Shacks can accommodate accessible living suitable for wheelchair access where required. Learn more about our aged care alternative here.
